September 2009 Admissions News (as of late July '08)

The admissions process, save for various glitches and oversights, is complete for September 2008. If you have a child entering grade 5 in September 2008, he or she may start the procedure for 2009 admission to our school in the fall.

As the process is overseen by the NYCDOE's Office of Student Enrollment, Planning, and Operations (OSEPO) we do not have all the deadlines and procedures in place as yet. We anticipate a much earlier start to the process to avoid some of the problems that cropped up in the first year OSEPO oversaw ALL special programs K-12 this past year but details are most definitely not available at this time.

If we had to guess, District 21 fifth graders who are eligible to test for the District 21 Magnet Program (we're part of that) will be contacted at some point between late October and late Thanksgiving to start the process.

Out of district fifth graders will need to be more proactive. We do not know the precise procedure at this time but it's likely to involve a phone call (718.449.6697) or visit to the District 21 Magnet Program admissions office here at Mark Twain at some point a few weeks after school resumes to complete some paperwork. We've never been allowed to begin the process online but perhaps this fall will be different.

We anticipate two afternoon Open Houses and two evening Open Houses in early December. The testing itself will likely take place on a set of weekends yet to be determined (somewhere in the late January to early March time frame). Selections will be made by OSEPO three to five weeks after all tests are given and graded by proctors from all the District 21 middle schools involved in the program.

You may continue to email our webmaster (prubin3@twain239.org) for general admissions or Mark Twain I.S. 239 questions but again, nothing concrete can be discussed for quite some time yet.
